Supplies Needed
Here is the supply list for third grade. The only additional item that did not make it on the list is ear buds. Remember your child will bring their own pair (can get at the dollar store) and they will be labeled and bagged for them to wear at the computers and with Ipads.

Third Grade Parent Information
Dear Families,
Welcome to third grade! I am looking forward to a wonderful year of learning with your child. Throughout the year, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I can be reached at school ((757)238-2452), by e-mail ([email protected]), or you may also send in a note with your child.
Discipline
Every student is expected to follow all classroom and school rules.
The Cardinal/School Rules are as follows:
-Follow directions
-Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself
-Use kind words
-Listen when someone is speaking
I have my classroom set up with Class Dojo. Class Dojo is an online behavior management system that tracks both positive and negative behaviors. Students will set goals for his/herself weekly, monthly, and each marking period. Students are expected to make mistakes, but overall they should average an 80% positive behavior record for the marking period in order to receive an ‘S’ for behavior. This leaves room for mistakes, but means that more than half the time your student is doing what he/she should be doing at school. Class Dojo can also be tracked from a parent account at home, and on your Smartphone. There will be a separate letter going home with more information about Class Dojo and your account information.
Students will have consequences for negative behavior that will begin with a warning, then a dojo point lost, silent lunch, and last a parent contact.
Students have opportunities to earn rewards in class for following school and classroom rules. They get extra reading or computer time, positive notes home in agenda, and extra recess time for compliments from others who notice excellent behavior when traveling around the school. I also have a class treasure box. Throughout the week, students will earn tickets for the treasure box for positive things such as following the rules, helping a classmate, or helping a younger student. On Friday I draw tickets for items in the treasure box. I generally have books or small dollar store items in the treasure box. We are always looking for donations for our positive behavior treasure box.

General Information
Attendance
Please note that instruction begins at 9:05. If a student comes in late or leaves early, the interruption is distracting for others and can throw our class off schedule. Doctor appointments and emergencies cannot be helped, but I appreciate parents making every effort to avoid interrupting instructional time.
Students may not be dropped off before 8:35 according to school policy.
Please make every effort to have your child at school before 9:05 so that he/she has enough time to prepare for the instructional day.
Homework
Homework is given and checked daily. It is only through practice that students learn the skills that they are taught. It is helpful to schedule a consistent time and place each evening to complete homework, for example, at the kitchen table from 4:30 to 5:30 or after dinner.
Working lunch gives students the opportunity to complete unfinished homework while eating lunch.
Reading: Students will be required to complete one reading passage a week as well as read A.R. level books at home. A.R. goals are given to each student at the beginning of each nine weeks. Students are encouraged to meet these goals by taking computerized tests on their book. Students should bring a book to class each day.
Math/Spelling homework will be given Monday to Thursday.
Students will be using Interactive Notebooks (IN) for science, math, social studies, and reading. These IN’s are considered to be their textbooks and are filled with information they need to know for their content, check point tests, and SOL tests in the spring. Encourage your child to review their science and social studies notes nightly.

Blog
I do not send a weekly newsletter home with students, but I keep a blog that is updated each week with announcements and homework. There are also links for additional learning at home, and helpful parent links.
I am looking forward to a wonderful school year of learning and working together as a team! A lot is expected of third graders, it is a year of not only academic growth, but also becoming more independent and responsible.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Amber Garcia
